Oh, please share your version with us, Eggos!

I saw you'd posted that, Eggo... however, as I'm currently also reading CoMC (been intending to do that for quite some time) and am only on chapter 15, I think I'm going to wait until I get to that point in the story to read yours. And before I started that, I was reading two books that were basically fanfics of Pride and Prejudice, but much more Darcy-centered. The editing in the books (or lack thereof) occasionally annoyed me, but other than this I enjoyed them. And I am so in the wrong fandom... can't publish Tolkienfics.

Good luck with CoMC. It's not a particularly hard book, per se, but it's character-packed and extraordinarily long-winded, in a way that strikes me as slightly Tolkien-ish, except there's ten times less action.
Argh! I almost bought one of those from the bookstore but couldn't bring myself to do it once I'd read the jacket summary... I believe it was called "Darcy's Daughters"...

Just looked that one up on Amazon-- it sounds dreadful! This was two parts of what's supposed to be a trilogy (third one's not out yet, to my knowledge). The series was called Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman by Pamela Aiden. And she seems to stay close to Austen's style, which I liked. Just needed to turn off my inner beta-reader and ignore the occasional lack of periods or whatnot.

Hmmm... I might just have to try those... I'm in search of lots of P&P material to keep me happy during my boycott of the new movie.
It really is irking that fanfic in some fandoms is actually publishable... but not in any fandoms I actually write in! (Well, not that I'd want to publish any of my current Tolkienfics, but still...). I also become vexed whenever I read a really good fanfic and realize that it'll never end up on the silver screen... darned copyright laws...

Yeah, Elizabeth is definitely in need of less pout and more wit. I was all for Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike (Jane) switching roles, but I was, unfortunately, not consulted . Not to mention that the wordplay sounds horribly mangled from the blurbs in the trailer... and why would you meddle with Austen's language?! CoMC... Chapter 109 and still plowing on... I'm beginning to wish that everyone in this book would just die.

I started with His Dark Materials and joined a reading group on another board together with Rosie.
And of course: the countdown for Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince. Only three days! Who will get them too on Saturday?

And of course: the countdown for Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince. Only three days! Who will get them too on Saturday? Me, for one! I've preordered three copies and I'll be picking them up at midnight, if the fates are kind and don't make me wait in line at the bookstore from 10:30 to 2:00 AM like last time .

I didn't go to pick it up. In fact, I've only read books one and three of that series. But my Potthead friends have finally gotten me to agree to try to give the books a fair reading (i.e. NOT comparing it to LotR as I read!), so we'll see how that goes.
On a happier note, I finished Count of Monte Cristo today, finally! Only took me something like three weeks, and for me, that's a long time!

Analysis: - I liked it, I suppose, but I think it was still about nine hundred pages longer than necessary. I've also been reading some Terry Prachett (fun!), Gregory Macguire's Wicked (double fun!- who knew the Wicked Witch of the West got that much action?), some extremely dull books assigned as summer reading (er, talk about no fun at all)... oh, yeah, and lots of Harry Potter! I certainly don't subscribe to the view that HP is a LotR ripoff, though there is one part in HBP that... well, anyone here who reads the book will probably know what I'm talking about once they get there...

But my Potthead friends have finally gotten me to agree to try to give the books a fair reading LOL, SMOR! You can usually spot Pottheads due to their bloodshot eyes (from staying up all night reading...) I just finished HBP, and I think I know the scene you're referring to, Eggo. My current reading list: Peak Oil: The View from Hubbert's PeakSorcery & Cecilia, Or, The Enchanted Chocolate Pot (very fun...a cross between Jane Austen and Harry Potter) Sleeping With ExtraterrestrialsThe Sign of the Four

I just finished HBP, and I think I know the scene you're referring to, Eggo. Heh . Even my sister commented on it, and she's only seen TTT once. Harry Potter and Jane Austen?! How come I haven't heard of this before? (*cackles with something that just might be fiendish glee*). Ooh, Sign of the Four! (*cackles with something that just might be fiendish glee, but of the sort that only crops up when Sherlock Holmes is mentioned within a 200-mile radius*). Most recently, I've read The Secret Life of Bees and (finally) The Da Vinci Code. TDVC was something of a disappointment... I managed to stay about twenty chapters ahead of the characters at all times, and the many supposedly "startling" and "controversial" revelations sprinkled throughout the ending were horribly anticlimactic. I'm interested to see how the movie turns out, though.

Having finished Harry Potter, I am reading The Brush Off and the first book of His Dark Materials.
*goes to the Harry Potter discussion thread*

I'm interested to see how the movie turns out, though. Yeah, me too. I would've enjoyed The Da Vinci Code much more if he'd just written it as a straight historical narrative, without overlaying the murder mystery. The constant cliffhanger chapter endings got on my nerves.... " 'I'm now going to tell you THE BIG HUGE SECRET THAT WILL DESTROY YOUR ENTIRE CONCEPT OF THE UNIVERSE!' she said. Chapter 44: It was raining in Sasketchewan." Blah. Still, the mingling of legend and history was fascinating. Did you go check out the "clues" in The Last Supper?

I'm currently reading one of the Sharpe books and enjoying it. It seems the TV series gives a rather santisied version of the horrors of war and Sharpe himself, but he still comes across as very likeable.
I quite enjoyed the "Da Vinci Code" but as I read "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" years ago,it wasn't new to me and I guessed who Sophie was quite early on but a fun read.I didn't enjoy his next book as much as the plot seemed near identical though the details about electing a Pope were interesting as it happened soon afterwards.

I was actually most interested in the differences between Virgin of the Rocks and Madonna of the Rocks... I'd always wondered why there were two versions! I've just finished reading Dante's Inferno, so naturally I hunted down an online quiz to find out what level of hell I belong in... www.4degreez.com/misc/dante-inferno-test.mv... and the verdict is Limbo! I get to sit around in a field and talk with intellectuals all day! Hurrah!
