CONGRATULATIONS to Steff and Linda - who did very well for their first time participating in the MEFAs!
I came out very lucky. I had hoped to win one first place with my longest and best story, The Falcon and the Star. Instead, I took:
First Place - The Falcon and The Star First Place - Gaiety In Gondor, as Steff was kind enough to mention First Place - Roots and Branches First Place - Birthday Kisses (I guess the combination of little Faramir and a puppy was irresistible) First Place - The Tracks of Time (which surprised me, I never thought I'd win anything with a Legolas ficlet that barely passed HASA Review) First Place - Fire and Flowering
I also had some other placements and honorable mentions. Of my 12 MEFA entries, only one didn't get anything (which was okay, I'm still on Cloud Nine about the rest).
(Rest and Recreation would probably have won its sub-category, but Meckinock finished her story A Matter of Honor and took it out of the Incomplete category into the same category as R&R, and quite deservedly took First Place, it's a marvelous tale; R&R won Second)
The Falcon and the Star won in its sub-cat over nine other stories, by a very comfortable margin; while Birthday Kisses took First by only one point.
And I got two Firsts in the Author categories - which was especially wonderful; I'd been wistfully hoping for a placement there, not really expecting anything definite considering all the outstanding authors there.
I exceeded my goal of writing 75 reviews, I managed 264. (I think the record goes to Dreamflower, who wrote 642 reviews I think, unless I'm mixing her up with Marigold). And I read lots of great stories, and even found a few really good hobbit fics for my own Favorites list.
I doubt very much that I'll be as lucky in the 2007 MEFAs, because I don't have anything like The Falcon and the Star in the works. But I'll always remember the 2006 MEFAs as the year I exceeded my expectations...
And my prediction of 2500 total votes in the competition, considering that the number of entries was down this year, was off - the competition ended with 5511 votes.
RAKSHA, over the moon and in danger of getting a swelled head
