I get inspiration from the most disturbing places and things: hurricanes visions while under the influence of strong drink, bad food, strong medication, etc. under large rocks damp, musty cellars tick-infested woodlands dark, crowded movie theatres (but the movie playing must have swordplay in it else it's not worth seeing anyway) Anyone else have this problem? quil ps. I'm really not kidding...just ask Rosie

Hmm... hurricanes, possibly, in my case, but none of the others.
I tend to find inspiration while A) staring at cozy, domestic, and particularly loathesome illustrations by Thomas Kincaide, B) listening to Irish instrumentals, or C) lurking in public restrooms in order to gain a few moment's respite from a particularly stifling social setting.
Then there are usual kinds of clichéd locales like the shower, the oceanfront, the garden-during-a-heavy-rain-or-fog, the-car-during-an-interminable-roadtrip, the bedroom-while-experiencing-heavy-insomnia... but I'm sure we've all heard those before.

Well, that explains why you're so good at torturing our dear Steward... Well, I got inspired to start writing my first fanfic by a quasi-stalker who turned into Grima... is that disturbing enough?

I think you have us all beaten, there. Well, as far as LotR fanfiction goes, my very first inspiration was the observation (while watching FotR): "Wow. Galadriel's Mirror looks uncannily like a birdbath..." Things kind of compounded themselves from there...

Quil, I remember too well how you were inspired to write that awful story! I don't mean "awful" as in bad of course, but "awful" as in not very nice!
It still makes me shudder.
My imagination can go into overdrive over anything. Unfortunately, I never seem to get these things down on paper. I should be more organised.

I can´t even say where I get my inspiration from. The idea to write something comes to me out of the blue and sometimes in the most unlikely situations, like driving in my car or arguing with my hubby.

Now this is the sort of thing I'm interested in learning about. I guess I just don't have the right sort of mind, since I can't imagine being able to drive down the street and get an idea that I'd feel strongly enough to write down, except maybe my grocery list. It really is intriguing. I guess it must be the same with all artists to some degree.

It really is intriguing. I guess it must be the same with all artists to some degree. I get pieces of scenes in my head; and see the story I want to build around them. Or, with my ficlets (100-800 words), I start writing, with place/time/event in mind and see what comes out.
I have had at least one dream about LOTR; but it didn't inspire any fanfic, even though it was AU and very colorful...

Now my curiosity is piqued! What is this "awful story"? We'll have to get quill to put in here - or link it. Or both.

Oh, sorry, I was at work.... Give me a few minutes and I'll post it. Yeah, read that just now. Wow Oh, and this is completely irrelevant, but can I mention that Rosie's new icon is totally hot?

That story still makes me shudder. And lest you all think I'm completely messed up, I have had inspiration from nicer things!!

I get inspiration from the strangest places such as reading an obituary of the Pope which quoted him saying something about you cannot achieve good by evil means,a single line in another story I read, feeling bored while waiting for something, or even when confined to bed with a migraine !

Many of my story ideas just strike me, and I go from there. An example is the time when I was walking to my car after work and thinking abouty the coconut discussions we had been having on the TORc swooing thread. Then suddenly I wondered: What if Faramir had to figure out how to open a coconut? And 'A Tough Nut to Crack' was born. Missing scenes are also an inspiration of mine-sometimes I just need to fill in the gaps! I wrote a story called 'Walls' just because I needed to 'see' Aragorn give Boromir's vambraces to Faramir and talk to him about his brother. I knew it wasn't going to be in the movie, and I really wanted it *some*where! 'Boromir's Gift' was the same way-for some reason PJ didn't give Boz a gift in the FotR EE, and I got to thinking, what sort of gift would Boromir need/want the most? (I know in the book he got a belt of gold leaves). But someday I really want to know why PJ didn't show Faramir's big bro getting a gift! Not even a lousy copy of the Lothlorien home game! Sue

I think it's pretty safe to say that Sue inspires me...her random comments have gotten two parodies out of me so far. ;D
And, actually, I do get a lot of inspiration from random things that happen in my life. One of the fics I have up here, "Simbelmyne", was inspired by a friend's son who seems to have a bit of a kiddie crush on me. I've written several that were inspired by nature (often just drabble-length, but I do have one longer one that was inspired by some snowy trees and stuff), and of course, gaps in the story.
