I am talking about the new The Producers--the one with Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane and not the original version with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel.
That being said, I much preferred the original version.
Maybe it’s because the original was so very good or maybe it’s because the movie is in parts almost like a caricature of the earlier version.
Mathew Broderick, who I generally adore, seemed to be trying to channel Gene Wilder, which made me more than a bit angry. Nathan Lane, who I generally do not like, also seemed to be trying to copy Zero Mostel. I wish they would have tried to make the roles their own.
On the other hand, Uma Thurman was very good as the Swedish secretary they hired and her part was expanded. In the original movie she could not really speak English, but in this she can. Her accent is even a light one. This works except for that they kept much of the original dialogue, including a line, right after she sings a song in English, saying that they just hired a secretary who cannot speak English. What? That should’ve been cut.
The other performances were very good and the movie overall was not bad. I think those who never saw the first movie would enjoy it, although I think it was too long.
We were on a renting spree and also got Pride and Prejudice (new version) and Munich. Hopefully they will be more enjoyable.
