i'm now wondering is it against the rules to say" Thank you to all my readers and reviewers" as I tend to put something like that at the end of every chapter and am I morally obliged to answer every signed in reviewer even if they don't have questions ?THose quibbles aside, I think it a great idea.

Ooh, nifty. That will definitely give me something to do while I'm waiting for my muse to come back so I can write the next chapter!

There are more changes at ff.net just announced, which effect most of us .I quote ... "Status: A new status/progress property has been added to each story with the following selectable values: In-Progress (default), and Complete. Please login to update your stories. This will help readers find completed entries and allow authors to differentiate their completed works from incomplete ones.
World: Lord of the Rings category is now a test-bed for new story property called "world". LOTR currently has 3 selectable worlds: book, movie, and alternate. In the case with LOTR, the movie can be vastly different from the book and the stories reflect that discourse. This new property is designed to allow writers/readers of these different but similar worlds to coexist peacefully and separately within a single category. If successful, we will expand its usage to other mega-categories. LOTR story authors should login to make sure every entry has the proper world label. "

Thank you for the information, Linda. I wonder, if we really should update stories, we had posted long time ago. I am a bit lazy lately.

I found it took only about a minute to alter the settings and if you have put "complete" on the story,it is done for you !Up to now, I like the changes and it is nice to chat to reviewers. I hope the new LOTR categories will make it easier to find stories with no slash or Mary Sue and are closer to Tolkien in spirit.

Where's this SoA place I hear so much about? Oh... Stories of Arda? (at a guess, but it sounds likely for a LotR site, and I'm sure I've heard that name floating around. ) Yeah, ff.net can be annoying... this really brilliant author called Jocelyn had a story taken down for a while because she responded to reviewers. It's only back up because she removed all the responses. She still responds on other sites and her newsgroup, just not on ff.net any more. I really don't get these no-script and no-songfic and whatever rules. Yes, scripts or songfics can be bad, but they can also be really good-- and the same applies for all types of stories, no matter what their format. -_-

Hmmm... has anybody seen the new forum option on ff.net? I'm not quite sure what to make of it... are these for discussions about our own works? Or our fandom? Or fanfic in general? Or all of these?

I've seen the option but have no idea what the discussions are meant to be about !The rules about being responsible for the content sound pretty daunting to say the least !

Yeah... and what's all that about "all content must be appropriate for teens"? Isn't that... well, ambiguous? I mean, we talking thirteen-year-olds or eighteen-year-olds? (And God knows the people who will have the most trouble following that rule are the teens themselves )

Thanks Linda, that's a really good insight.
Whilst the format for ff.net is simple, and the content probably the best (variety wise) anywhere, the attitude of the admin. leaves a lot to be desired. In fact, it's quite amazing that the site is as big as it is when there appears to be little to no contact between admin. and authors.
I submitted a scripted story by mistake - I didn't realise it wasn't allowed - and I got the rudest letter back.

I asked their admin a question a few weeks ago and am still awaiting a reply !I think it dreadfully unfair that if you inadvertently break the rles, that they do not give you a chance to put things right rather than deleting material willy nilly.

I don't suppose fanfiction.net's rules would bother me so much if I felt like it at all improved the quality of fanfic—but instead, it means is that an appallingly written Legomance or self-insert will pass through the nets while a creative scriptfic gets deleted. And they really are quite rude about it... I live in dread of falling foul of another rule and getting my stories yanked...

I try to keep to the rules, but still fear I'm breaking some obscure new ruling. The problem is that if someone doesn't like you or your stories, they could strike at you with a single mouse click by reporting something !Yet, I've seen some writers get away with blatant rule infrigements. It is a weird site.I'm just glad most of my stories are on other sites too.Hae you tried ficwad? They have very few rules.

I just tried to see and it won't let me up load either. I got this message FanFiction.Net Error -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An error has occurred while processing your request. If the problem persists, please alert site admin via support.fanfiction.net. All errors are logged for administrative and security purposes. Stupid site !

It is a weird site.I'm just glad most of my stories are on other sites too.Hae you tried ficwad? They have very few rules. I would beware of posting one's fanfic on just one site, no matter how big or popular that site seems to be. Something can always happen to block or shut down the sit; especially if, as the Wiki encyclopedia is correct, FF.net is now run by only one person.
Of course, isn't SoA maintained by just one person? Or is it two or three.
Hopefully the people who run these sites will eventually take on extra help or hand over the reins, or, somewhere between 50-90 years, the administrators will die of old age, and the site will go with them.
I want my fanfic to be seen by people who love LOTR and appreciate fanfic 100 years from now. If there is still an Internet, of course. Presumptuous, much? But that's the way I feel.
Ficwad is a nice little site. The problem is there aren't too many LOTR writers, or stories there (84 right now I think); and not as many reviews. I do intend to post a few of my things up there and see what kind of reviews I get.
It is reprehensible that FF.net could delete an author's material, all of it, in response to one accusation, without bothering to check out the supposed infringement.
I also recommend Tolkienfanfiction.com. It's a lovely site, nice layout, well-maintained, easy to work with, few or no rules. The only downside is that with a few exceptions, stories get very few reviews, if any.
My problem is that it takes me a long time to upload a story to any archive, and a lot of effort; and for that effort, I would feel cheated if I got no reviews, or one or two.
Now if everyone reading this post suddenly bombarded ficwad.com with 1-2 of their best Tolkien fanfic stories, and reviewed ten others, we could maybe change that. Ditto Tolkien fanfiction.com (where there are many more stories than at ficwad.com, btw). But I would imagine that everyone here has their own individual preferences, and probably wouldn't agree to suddenly spend all that time/effort on such a gamble, let alone which site...I'm not blaming anyone, just saying what I believe to be true. (and how I'd feel if someone proposed such an endeavor to me if I was unfamiliar with those particular sites and also too busy to post on more than the sites where I already post stories)

I couldn't agree more,Raksha.I post at several sites in case one disappears.I would also reccomend keeping a copy of the story on the hard drive and a floppy disc, maybe even e mailing a copy of a story that hasn't been posted yet to a friend.
I posted a few of my stories at Ficwad, two had some reviews, while others were ignored, they are posted at Tolkienfanfiction.com where I don't think anyone has ever read them, but my main sites remain ff.net and SOA. I am currently reworking a story to get it on SOA,so they will all be there eventually.
I also would advise copying reviews on to one's hard drive, especially at ff.net.
Like you, I would hope someone might read my stories long after I'm gone.
